We went on the annual pilgrimage to Maine, and it was very relaxing. And I spontaneously decided to run my first 5K in over 17 years.

It was just down the road in Schoodic point (one peninsula over from Mt. Desert Island in Maine). The course went into the (relatively tiny) Schoodic chunk of Acadia National Park. Mostly we followed the ring-road along the edge of the water. Start and finish were just outside the park.

I came in 50th; I'm guessing the field was about 120-150, but a big pile of them were the walking retired, so I was reasonably far back in the actual runners. Time: 24:17, a 7:49 mile. I was hoping to break 8:00 on the mile, so I was reasonably pleased (I don't tend to work out on the clock, or to have an accurate measurement system if I'm not on the track). Flagged a bit after the first mile. There was a short dirt road segment. This is where the guy pushing a stroller passed me. I expected that to happen sooner or later; you don't push a running stroller in a race unless you're pretty Hard Kore. He and the folks clumped around me formed a little pack and I lost 'em.

That said, I ran the race in Tevas. Who knows how much better I would have done with my actual running shoes? And of course I hadn't run in something like a week and a half. So, more workouts for me. Maybe I should run another race...

Meanwhile, we hung out with [livejournal.com profile] nuclearpolymer and [livejournal.com profile] dcltdw for a couple of days, acquiring many blueberries. We ate tons of blueberry-ish treats. I cooked a pretty good approximation to the brined pork for seven (I didn't do the grilling, busying myself with the veg instead). We hiked two Acadia peaks and three cliffy trails in about 4.5 hours. And I experienced the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival, which is very good on the arty/crafty front. Too bad the Methodists hadn't optimized their funnel cake production.

Oh, yeah, and we saw Fiddler on the Roof. I'm still having flashes of the Japanese version of the opening number.
